KLINGELBEEK
Mediterranean Garden with Tropical Accents
On a wooded estate by the Rhine, a former monastery annexe was converted into a bold single-family home. We reinterpreted the convent’s enclosed gardens with green clusters and a monumental roof garden. Stepping stones of marble lead through carpets of Soleirolia soleirolii, with an eclectic mix of evergreens, maples, grasses, roses, wisteria and Boston ivy.
At the heart of the house, an evergreen strawberry tree takes centre stage. Lush planting with palm, bamboo and Mahonia turns the patio into a vibrant tropical valley, visible from every angle — even from the upper floor.
Near the bedroom, a windswept roof garden withstands extreme conditions with Scots pine, stag’s horn sumach, yucca and aromatic grey plants like rosemary, thyme and santolina.
